Lark Hill Primary school exterior

In April 2016 MTX were awarded the contract to install a new modular building to provide further classroom facilities for Lark Hill Primary school.

The Requirements

Salford City Council had requirements for a new educational building for Lark Hill Primary school in Salford. The scope was to provide bespoke modular buildings to accommodate the current capacity of primary students. The available space to house the new educational facilities was provided by MTX under Galliford Try
for the North West.

The project was to provide a modular educational establishment to house 8no classrooms, a break out area and wash room facilities. MTX provided a 2 storey modular building to deliver these requirements.

The Solution

It was decided that the new 28no bay modular building would be constructed on the existing playing fields which were situated on the left hand side of the main school building. Work commenced onsite in May 2016 and the building was delivered to site on the 25th July 2016 with the M&E fit out commencing immediately after this.

All fit out works were completed within 9 weeks, this included the external cedar cladding and render finish.

The building equipment included the following:

  • Stand-alone boiler plant
  • BMS control system
  • Controlled roof lights- these were installed to supply teacher control as well as fully smart control linked to Co² sensor and rain sensors
  • Mechanical ventilation system- this was installed for compliance and class room ventilation

In addition to this MTX installed fan lights above classroom doors to further encourage natural light to increase the school’s aim to become more eco-friendly. Each classroom was fitted with electric blinds which were operated by single teacher control and each classroom achieved air permeability of less than 4.75m³.

Main Considerations

MTX successfully closed off a number of residential roads to ensure the deliveries got to site. Keeping this project within budget and on time was the key requirement for the client. As the onsite construction period took place in the summer 2016 holiday it was vital that the facility was ready for use by September 2016 and within the Education
boards strict budget.

The modules arrived to site in July 2016 and the whole project was completed and handed over to the client within 10 weeks of them arriving at site. Furthermore the project was fully compliant with Building Bulletin regulations.

The Salford School schemes were delivered by MTX Contracts LTD within challenging existing live school environments. The MTX team were involved in close liaison within these live schools to help minimise any disruption and produced a finished product of good overall quality to delighted end users.
